5 Signs Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading

5 Signs Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading

Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system. It distributes power to every circuit in the property and, when working correctly, protects you from electrical faults. But if your switchboard is outdated, it may not be doing its job properly, and that’s a serious safety risk.

Here are five signs it might be time to upgrade.

1. You still have ceramic fuses
If your switchboard uses ceramic rewirable fuses rather than modern circuit breakers, it’s well past its use-by date. Ceramic fuses were standard decades ago, but they don’t provide the same level of protection as today’s circuit breakers and safety switches. They’re also more prone to overheating, which increases the risk of electrical fire.

2. Your safety switch trips regularly
The occasional trip isn’t unusual, but if your safety switch is tripping frequently, something isn’t right. It could be a faulty appliance, but it can also indicate that your switchboard is overloaded or that the wiring behind it is deteriorating. Either way, it needs investigating by a licensed electrician.

3. You’re running out of circuits
Older switchboards were designed for a time when homes had far fewer electrical demands. If you’ve added air conditioning, a home office, a pool pump, or other high-draw appliances, your switchboard may not have enough circuits to handle the load safely. Overloading circuits is one of the most common causes of electrical fires in Australian homes.

4. You notice a burning smell or discolouration
This is an urgent warning sign. If you can smell burning near your switchboard or notice any scorch marks, discolouration, or melted plastic, stop using the affected circuits immediately and call a licensed electrician. These are signs of overheating, which can lead to fire if left unaddressed.

5. Your home doesn’t have a safety switch
Queensland law requires safety switches on all power and lighting circuits in residential properties. If your home doesn’t have one, or only has a safety switch on some circuits, your switchboard needs upgrading to meet current compliance standards. A safety switch can be the difference between a minor trip and a life-threatening shock.

What does a switchboard upgrade involve?

A switchboard upgrade typically involves replacing your old fuse box with a modern switchboard fitted with circuit breakers and safety switches. The process usually takes a few hours and may require a temporary power shutdown. Once complete, your home will have better protection against electrical faults, more capacity for modern electrical demands, and full compliance with current Australian standards.
